Fight Over Prostitute In Ibadan Claims Three Lives

Three people were feared dead while a police post, 11 vehicles and nine motorcycles were either razed or vandalised in Bodija area of Ibadan between Thursday night and early yesterday after a fight between two men over a prostitute snowballed into a major violence.

The bloody clash forced thousands of marketers and traders out of the Bodija market. Some butchers whose shops are close to the scene of violence left their meats on the table and ran for dear lives.

Investigations revealed that the violence was triggered by a fight between an Hausa man and a Fulani man over a prostitute in the area.

The Fulani man was alleged to have stabbed the Hausa man in the process.

Fellow Hausas swooped on him, arrested and took him to Bodija police station on Thursday, demanding justice.

However, the crowd regrouped in front of the police station yesterday and became uncontrollable. In the process, a policeman reportedly shot into the air to disperse the crowd.

The action enraged the mob who later sacked the policemen from their station before setting it ablaze.
In the process, detainees inside the police cell were set free.

The quick response of numerous security men checked the escalation of the crises.

When newsmen got to the scene of the incident yesterday, all the stalls, shops, banks, filling stations in the area were deserted, while the troubled spot was barricaded by fierce-looking policemen.
